01 Principles and objectives

Ta’leem.Tarbiyya.

At AGI, education (taʿlim) goes hand in hand with spiritual development (tarbiyya). We believe that true learning should nurture not only the mind, but also the heart and character. It is therefore a central aim of AGI that as students grow in knowledge, they also grow in humility, sincerity, and servitude to Allah. In this way, knowledge becomes a means of drawing closer to Allah and living in accordance with His guidance.

  • Contextualised study — Students are actively taught and encouraged to apply what they learn in their daily lives, both personally and as active members of the community.

  • Students rooted in character — Knowledge without character is incomplete. AGI nurtures students whose learning is reflected in their humility, conduct and devotion — inside the classroom and beyond it.

  • Spiritually inspired education — All students are provided a unique opportunity to embark upon a programme of inner purification and development alongside their formal studies.

Hazrat Sufi Muhammad Munir Hijazi (ra)

9 February 1946 — 15 September 2020

Known simply as ‘Sufi Sahib’, Hazrat Sufi Muhammad Munir Hijazi (ra) was born in Rawalpindi in 1946, came to the United Kingdom in 1965, and devoted his life to teaching, spiritual training and the service of the Muslim community. He opened the Al Ghazzali Institute on 5 January 2013 and guided it until his passing in 2020.

  2. 1965Migrates to the United Kingdom
  3. 1974Meets his teacher, Shaykh Muhammad Abdul Wahhab Siddiqi (ra), in Bradford
  4. 1985Relocates to Coventry to study full time at Jamia Islamia
  5. 1994Granted the Khilafa; begins teaching at Hijaz College
  6. 2006Begins gatherings of remembrance in East London
  7. 2013Opens the Al Ghazzali Institute on 5 January
  8. 2020Returns to his Creator on 15 September
